Programmers are often intimidated by design but a little try can give a better ROI. There are tips that can make your website look more professional and accessible. I am writing these points after implementing it on at least 10 websites. Off-course, I am not a designer so can’t give you the real stream but being a programmer, I don’t mind fonts. It just needs to look beautiful.
I want to make sites look attractive and beautiful. It is partly due to vanity and partly due to realism. Vanity is because, it’s my inner desire that people praise my work and realism just because there is common thought that a website cannot be credible unless it is not design attractively. Designs consist of knotty rules nowhere written and boosted by un learnable sense of taste. But with time I came to know that with little designing sense and some dedicated effort a project can look vaguely attractive.

Bootstrap can help you lot: If you are not using bootstrap, start it now. It is one of the important technical achievements which democratize the entire process of web design. Bootstrap is a grid system, with common elements. It allows you to lay the website as you want. The website can be dropped in simple elements like forms and tables or with CSS or HTML at last. Bootstrap also allows customizing your download so that you can keep your website light weight. And if you are pressed for time, you can ask your portal developers to go for buying a theme from Wrap bootstrap. The themes are created by professional designer that won’t give a unique look but will make the website look good quickly.

Work on Fonts: Web fonts helps in making website look distinctive. Add some sweet fonts from Google web fonts. If not working, you can find plenty of suggestions on web helping you decide which fonts to use and which to not. The only point of concern is keeping the right ratio between title font and body font.

Textures: Textures helps in making the website look classy. It is an instant way and thus changing the texture is the preferred way of designers to give a new decent look to the websites. Put the grey, stripy elegant background or green cool background, texture is sure to beautify your website.

Uses of Icons don’t just cut down on HTTP requests the also helps designer in setting image based icons quickly and easily. You can also download the icons and add reference to CSS file in the header.

You can also add some CSS3 goodness which can really help the key elements of your website to stand out from the crowd. For instance if you are limited with time, you can try adding box and text shadow to make your heading look apart.
Lastly add a twist. The twist can be anything like adding a background image or playing with the font size of some of the alphabets. If you have a better designing sense you can add wonder to the website by little twist and curl. Changing the color scheme would also bring in same effect. Your portal developers can try out these steps to give a decent look to your website and that too in less than 60 minutes.
